Tesla Filament – Rainbow
While purchasing filament, a general query may come into your mind – is Tesla Filament worth buying? Of course, 3D printer filaments are a significant part of the 3D printing industry. Here is all we need to know about the Tesla rainbow filament.
Let’s take a look at Tesla Filament 1KG PLA Rainbow as they call it Multicolour Gradient. This material is suitable for all FDM 3D printers that can handle 1.75mm diameter filament. The recommend hot-end temperature is 180-220c, and the hot-bed is 0-50c, for my setting, I will add them in the description of each model. Specification Composition: POLYACTIDE RESIN, Manufactured by: Extrusion, Plastic Family: copolymer, Density: 1.25 ± 0.05g / cm3, Dryness: Dryness: 99.99% ,Tensile Strength: 60Mpa ,Spool Diameter: 200mm ,Core Diameter: 57mm. Tesla performs strict tests for colour uniformity and filament diameter.
Now rainbow filaments from all different manufacturers can come in many different styles and finishes. For example, the colours can be metallic, retro, pastel, vibrant and dark. Now on to the finishes silk, gloss, matt, glitter and marble there are a lot of different types of filament out there. With any tesla rainbow filament, the transitions and where the colours are placed could be different from each 1kg of filament. This is because the filament is made in batches so it would be hard to get everyone the same.
First of all, the box, black with a colourful logo, to me the box is everything tells you that Tesla means business and takes pride in their products. Makes you want to open the box with excitement, it is excellent for giving a gift to someone and seeing them smile with joy.
Instead of a plain brown box that makes you want to leave it on a shelf (haha). Came in a vacuum sealed bag with a silica gel pouch but this bag was different from any other filaments we have had, it was resealable. Let’s get on to the more exciting part showing you pictures, videos, and what we think of the Tesla rainbow filament.
Heat Post Processing
Now using a heat gun for heat post processing your 3D printed model can serve significant benefits and problems. It can make the model stronger by helping each layer to join better, and it can also make it look more glossy matt or satin. But it can also change the colour of the 3D printed model.
How did the Tesla Rainbow filament do with heat post processing?
The Tesla rainbow filament did not handle well at all to the heat. It changed but not in the right way took away the glossy look and went dull, changing the colour to go a lot lighter to a white. I would not recommend using this technique on filaments that are silky or glossy.
3D Print Of Fancy Skull
Started with the fancy skull printed at Y 220mm, X 140mm, Z 155mm, took around 25 hours. Clean straight print no clogs or jams using the Tevo Little Monster and a 0.4 nozzle. For the settings I used were, Infill 12%, perimeter shells 1, top solid layers 4, bottom solid layers 3, heat bed temperature at 50c, hotend temperature 205c used a layer height of 0.25. For my 3D printer, the default printing speed is set at 4500, but of course, you can speed it up more using the control panel. Yes, there was support needed for this model mainly for the small overhangs.
You can get this 3D printable file of the Ancient Skull Artifact from Thingiverse by – Kimbolt. She has two versions of the skull. One will require to support the one I choose, not realising her second version is built around a 3D printer that has a lot of fans. Layer cooling fans can help reduce drooping, warping but overall can help improve print quality. So for this case, you may not need to use support, and it will help reduce print time.
Kimbolt has a different version of the fancy skull that’s made into a skull planter pot. You can find this model on MyMiniFactory for sale at $2.99. It would be a great model for those who love flowers, succulents, or if you are like me who can’t keep real plants buy some artificial flowers.
So I’m not an expert at describing the colours, I will state the basics. For this model, it changes about 11 times this is including the transitions, the following bold colours that appeared are yellow, orange, cream, red, purple, blue and teal. The pictures don’t give it justice. Tesla filament came out fantastic with all the transitions in the right places, silky smooth with pastel like colours
3D Print Horse Ornament Wealth And Fortune
The Second two tests are of the Horse Ornament Bring Wealth And Fortune, both the same size, Z 100m, Y 85mm, X 45mm, took under 3 hours each. Printed on the Tevo Nereus and used a 0.4 nozzle. Of course, I had to try the Tesla rainbow filament with a small model to see if there would be a decent amount of colour changes. For the settings I had set them to, Infill 12%, perimeter shells 2, top solid layers 4, bottom solid layers 3, heat bed temperature at 60c, hotend temperature 190c using a layer height of 0.25.
For the Tevo Nereus, the default printing speed is set at 3000. You can speed it up more by using the control panel or by editing the firmware. Yes, there was support needed for this model mainly for the small overhangs again. The print surface I used is the FilaPrint and the Switch manufactured by FilaFarm.
The 3D printable model is on Cults3D by – Stronghero3D. There are many great models from them. I’m not sure if they designed them. I will name some fresh models. Necalli Street Fighter, Phoenix, Monkey King and Guan Yu (an ancient Chinese hero). Some people may recognise there name Stronghero3D are known for 3D printer filaments also. I don’t have much information on these models just where to find them.
Again I will state the primary colours, really pleased how they came out silky and shiny. For the first print test, it changed only two times from a green to a golden brown and the second test had three colour changes gold, peach, pink. But in both models there seem to be mysterious colours transforming throughout.
There are strips of blues, reds, greens, greys and possibly black. The pieces are blended into the model quite well, so you will need to look closer. This may have occurred while making the filament. Smooth transitions on both models, no hard line showing where the new colour stopped and started. Printed fantastic on the Tevo Nereus.
3D Print Of A Spiral Vase
Final test the Spiral Vase printed in vase mode at Y 220mm, X 140mm, Z 155mm, just over 2 hours 30 minutes on the Geeetech A10M 3D printer using a 0.4 nozzle. The settings that were used are, Infill 12%, perimeter shells 2, top solid layers 0, bottom solid layers 3, heat bed temperature at 60c, hotend temperature 200c using a layer height of 0.25.
For the Geeetech A10M, the default printing speed is set at 3000. I couldn’t help myself to speed it up to 150%, but this reduced the print time by 1 hour less, quality came out amazing. The only fault is that when higher speed it starts doing salmon skin. This will be something I will need to fix, no support needed!
Interested in printing the spiral vase, it can be download from Thingiverse by – Streetfire_Industries. This person has 24 designs on his page seem to be mixed models, parts for 3D printers. There isn’t any information regarding the vase. All in all, the spiral vase is a good model. If you want to test out the colour transition, easy, quick 3D print in vase mode.
There is not much to say, not many colours on the 3D printed vase in general, the colours again are fantastic. Rose pink to a teal green with a perfect transition in between of pale pink.
Tesla Filament Conclusion
Needing a rainbow that is good for overall 3D prints? Tesla Filament is the way to go. Easy to print with no clogs or jams, 100% with virgin natural materials and ECO-friendly. Minimum tolerance and low warping to ensure consistent feeding and stable prints with an extremely high success rate.
